University Announces New Provost and SON Dean

Hampton University President, Dr. William R. Harvey, has announced the appointment of Dr. Pamela Hammond, who previously served as the dean of the University’s School of Nursing, as Hampton University Provost.

Dr. Arlene Montgomery, who has over 30 years experience in clinical nursing and most recently was assistant dean for academic affairs of the HU School of Nursing, has been appointed dean of the HU School of Nursing. more… Posted: 10 Jul 2009

The Hampton University School of Nursing (SON) offers degree programs in nursing on the undergraduate, graduate and PhD levels. Undergraduate programs include the B.S., LPN to B.S. and RN to BS programs. In addition, an accelerated BS program is also offered through the College of Virginia Beach. Master of science degree programs are offered for the roles of nursing education, administration, and nurse practitioner. Specialties for these roles include women's health, pediatrics, family health, community health nursing, advanced adult nursing, and community mental health/psychiatric nursing. The doctor of philosophy degree in nursing is offered with a focus on families and family research. The PhD and master of science program for the role of Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is available as distance education programs.

The School of Nursing has the broad goal of improving health care and the overall quality of life in the state, the region, and the nation. It strives to reach this goal through the education of health care professionals, through provision of expertise and health care services to the health care systems and through research in promotion of wellness in nursing and in health care. The School of Nursing is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing, and is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Since, 1943, the nursing faculty of Hampton University has continually provided high quality professional nursing education at the Bachelor of Science degree level. The nursing doctoral program at Hampton is the first such program to be fully implemented at an HBCU.
