A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Ms. Sledge received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of South Alabama in Mobile. She has served as a clinical nurse in the United States Air Force, specializing in pediatrics and obstetrics and later as a nurse educator in the United States Air Force Reserves. It was during this time that she realized the intersection of her two loves, nursing and education, and began her career as a clinical nurse educator in academia at the University of South Carolina, Columbia in 2008.
Ms. Sledge continues to aim her research efforts towards improving the representation of diversity in the healthcare workforce by identifying ways to increase students' motivation and persistence in nursing programs. Currently, she is working toward the completion of her Doctorate of Education with a focus on investigating variables causing barriers to enrollment and completion of undergraduate nursing programs for minority students. She enjoys time spent educating and promoting wellness for children and their families in the Hampton Roads community by offering various classes that raise awareness of positive life choices and healthy living habits.
